Symptom

Whenever the server generates a 404 "Not Found" error, you want to display your own page or redirect calls to an existing page on your website.

Solution

Insert a line into your .htaccess file:

ErrorDocument 404 /

for example

ErrorDocument 404 /my-own-error-page.html

Now, every time a page or image is invoked that is missing from the server, the web server will instead load the "my-own-error-page.html" page and send it to the browser. The error page can be designed arbitrarily. You can also specify a .php file there or simply send every call to the homepage /index.html or /index.php. Keep in mind that this page must be present otherwise the server will end up in an infinite loop (which automatically quits after n attempts without output).
